The first paper mill on this site was established in 1784 by Butler & Hudson. The last mill was built in 1899 by The American Writing Paper Company. in the following years various firms used the building for diversified enterprises, however with the passage of time deterioration of the building and a lack of interest in pursuing any activity resulted in a demolishing. of the structure. All that remains is the chimney, pictured above.
While I was visiting the site, a kayaker appeared and ran the rapids of the Hockanum River, adjacent to the mill site.
The U-Haul vehicles, parked close by, indicate a typical situation in these times of the Corona Virus.
